| What is the best software out there to stop and/or check for nasties that may be lurking in Windows XP or Microsoft Explorer?

| | I use Spybot: Search and Destroy. Not sure if it's the best but it seems to do the job. |

| | AVG Antivirus is a good antivirus program. The full version has plenty of tools to keep everything in check, but most feature would go unused by the more basic user, and for that reason alone, the free verion would be fine. AVG also make a anti-spyware program now that does a brilliant job of tracking down many of the spyware nasties that dot he rounds. Most spyware programs say they removed the problem where they actually haven't, AVG list all the details of the file, so if AVG is unsuccessful in removing a spyware for whatever reason you can get the details from the program and use a more aggressive technique (hijackthis process inspector) and remove them manually. Many free an commercial spyware killers don't do this and just post that it have moved the file to the vault which in turn does nothing at all. The free versions are very robust, but they do offer paid PRO versions of thier software for peace of mind. AVG Antivirus (Free Edition) http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/ AVG Anti-Spyware (Free Edition) Inclued 30 Day Trial Of Pro Version http://free.grisoft.com/doc/20/us/frt/0

| Hi Rob,
In addition to AVG anti-spyware and anti-virus you should also use Lavasoft ad-aware for finding and removing spyware.
By using these three products you should have everything covered.
Just remember that if you use the free versions you will need to manual update the data files regularly (weekly).

Excellent point. While this isn't a problem with AVG Antivirus, it is something you will have to do with the free version of AVG Anti-Spyware. Thanks for pointing that out robbo, I neglected to point that out.
